Saltwater fishing is as much about the adventure as it is about the fish. Many sport fish species are big and mean – and the water is sometimes big and bad.
The Gulf Coast of Florida offers offers an outlandish variety of opportunities to wet your line. Gulf Coast anglers chase everything from dainty speckled trout to massive blue marlin in environments that range from shallow saltwater flats to deep off-shore seas. The Gulf of Mexico has the most artificial reefs in the world, and the bays and bayous just add to the variety of fishing options.
The inshore trolling season (just off the beaches) starts in the early spring and continues through the fall into November; likely catches include Cobia, Spanish Mackrel, King Mackrel and Biting Big. From May to October the inshore waters bring in Bonito, Jack Crevalle and Dolphin Fish. Or hit the high seas and chase the elusive Blue Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna, Amberjack, Cobia and Red Snapper.
Saltwater fishing can be simple or complex. You can start on the beach with basic tackle and a handful of saltwater rigs, or you can rent high tech gear and a powerful fishing boat. Read about beach fishing for Pompano on Toes in the Sand Blog.
